270kVCable Tunnel Diversion Sellindge Kent

Client: Union Rail/National Grid/Pirelli Cables
Project Value: £755,000
Scope:

The route of the ‘Channel Tunnel Rail Link’ will sever the existing electricity supply route from France to the Sellindge converter station. Delta were initially awarded a contract by National Grid to carry out the feasibility and subsequent design of a replacement 2m dia cable tunnel beneath the M20 between Ashford and Folkestone.

The contract to install the new cabling along the new route was awarded to Pirelli Cables, who then appointed Delta Civil Engineering to build the new 80m long cable tunnel. The contract required the sinking of 2no 4.5m dia segmental shafts, sunk by underpinning, either side of the motorway, plus the installation of pumps, alarm systems, sprinklers, heat detection, lighting and building of two ventilated head houses above each shaft.
