Bath Road Culvert Renovation Wells

Client: Somerset County Council / W S Atkins
Project Value: £142,000
Scope:

Sections of a culverted stream which runs beneath two busy roads in Wells needed upgrading following an inspection under the Bridge Strengthening Programme, to meet the new legislation for increased axle weights. A feasibility study was carried out by Delta to develop the most cost effective options to improve their structural integrity, identify and locate existing services. A contract to carry out the works was then awarded under an ECC Option ‘C’ Target Cost, with any necessary service diversions carried out in advance.

The first upstream section, constructed originally in masonary beneath Hawkers Lane, was replaced on line using precast concrete eliptical pipes 1200 x 650 laid flat, due to the limited cover. New brick chambers were constructed at each end of the new culvert and the work was completed in less than 10 days under a road closure.

The Bath Road section was constructed off line as a 900 diameter pipe jacked tunnel, 17m long, from a drive pit on the grass verge into a new reception pit, adjacent to the existing culvert, on the opposite side of the road. A 7m long pipe jacked connection was then driven from the same shaft to a new chamber downstream next to the existing culvert in the grass verge. Flows were turned round via new benching & internal backdrops within the new chambers and the existing Bath road section was then grouted up with all laterals reconnected.
