Blackdyke to Kennet Tunnel Renovation

Client: The Environment Agency
Project Value: £1,000,000
Scope:

Part of the Ely Ouse-Essex Water Transfer Scheme, completed in the late sixties, involved the construction of a 20km long section of 2.5m diameter precast concrete segmental tunnel. Distance between shafts varied from 3 to 10kms with depths from 30 to 90m. Delta were awarded the contract under ECC conditions of contract, to Drain the tunnel, Clean, Inspect and carry out agreed necessary repairs and refill, within a tight 18 week programme. Once the tunnel was drained and before operations could begin, a comprehensive ventilation system, consisting of 6no 600mm dia 23kw fans was installed to meet the air flow requirements for the carefully controlled confined space entry procedures.

A ‘Cleaning Machine’ specifically developed and built by Delta consisting of a combination of 2000psi jet sprays fixed to rotating arms with fixed brushes was attached to a ‘Kubota ST30 Tractor’. This purpose built system enabled operations to advance at a satisfactory rate in order to meet the crucial Tunnel Refill Date. The inspection team closely followed the machine to agree remedial works, which in turn was carried out by the advancing repair crew. The works was completed in 16 weeks allowing the tunnel to be refilled 2 weeks ahead of programme.
