Cinema Culvert Renovation Wells

Client: Somerset County Council / W S Atkins
Project Value: £237,000
Scope:

A Section of culvert running beneath a heavily trafficked road junction in the City of Wells needed upgrading following an inspection under the Bridge Strengthening Programme. A feasibility study was carried out by Delta to develop the most cost effective options to improve it’s structural integrity plus the location and identification of existing services running across and within the culvert. A contract to carry out the works was awarded under an ECC Option ‘C’ Target Cost, with necessary service diversions to be carried out in conjunction with the main works.

The most cost efficient trenchless option was to reline the existing 2.8m wide x 750mm high masonary culvert with pumped in-situ concrete using an adjustable internal steel shuttering system, equal to its continuous maximum internal size. Initially, a chamber was excavated in the carriageway where the original culvert construction changed from masonary, to three 900 diameter concrete pipes, running beneath the Cinema car park. However, before cleaning out and renovation of the culvert begin, major gas / BT / water service diversions were implemented. New block walls were then built either side of the new chamber and excavations created by the service diversions were filled with foam concrete. A redundant 18” gas main running across the culvert invert was then removed to allow the culvert to be cleaned out then relined to complete the works.
