Culvert Renovation Churston South Devon

Client: Dart Valley Railway
Project Value:200,000
Scope:

Following their routine annual track inspection it was found necessary to improve the structural integrity and hydraulic performance of a 140 year old, 10m deep, 750 diameter stone arched culvert running horizontally beneath their single track railway close to the Churston tunnel.

A 10m deep, 3.3m diameter one pass caisson shaft was sunk initially onto the existing culvert at the only practical location which was trackside. The culvert was then accessed either side of the shaft to assess the structural condition and then develop the most cost effective method to renovate the structure. Due to the extensive nature of the blockage and partial collapse, it was decided to construct  5ft x 4ft timber headings in both directions and reline the culvert with GRP pipes and grout up the annulus. The downstream section was however realigned to a shallower gradient to reduce the amount of ‘no-dig’ with a new spillway constructed to the existing outfall.

All works were carried out during periods of inactivity reserved for important annual maintenance.
