Grouting of Barrow Compensation Reservoir

Client: Bristol Water Plc
Project Value: £26,500
Scope:

During a routine inspection a ‘Piping’ feature was found in the Barrow Compensation Reservoir. This had created a leakage path along the draw-off culvert at the interface with the embankment fill and was considered a serious reservoir safety matter.

Delta were awarded a negotiated 3 week contract to seal this leakage problem by drilling and grouting in a predetermined pattern to establish a cut-off between the valve shaft, situated approx 20m from the outlet structure at the top of the reservoir embankment and the limestone foundation, to plug the leakage waterway along the culvert/embankment interface. 4no vertical grout holes were drilled into the rock foundation at the base of the 10m deep valve shaft, with a further 4no inclined holes drilled around the shaft to seal any cavities present. 3no radial grout rings were then installed at 5m spacings within the  draw off culvert as a defence against further leakage from this source. It was necessary to install a temporary diversion of the flows through the 150mm dia outlet valve in the draw-off structure and to install a standby pump and temporary pipework connecting to the overspill channel to accommodate any inundation events.
