Oxen CoveTank Storage Tunnel Brixham

Client: South West Water
Project Value: £2,900,000
Scope:

Delta were awarded a Design and Build ‘Partnering, contract to construct a 450m long 2.8m x 2.4m storage tunnel, using ‘Drill and Blast’ methods, plus connecting microtunnels, machine pipe jacks and segmental tunnels to drain Brixham Town centre into the new tunnel.

The main tunnel was driven from a 10m deep x 6m diameter segmental shaft, situated adjacent to the harbour, with early sinking affected by the tidal waters until natural ground was reached. The rock strata, particularly at the beginning of the tunnel, contained large bands of wet clay which required major temporary support works using colliery arches and in-situ concrete, to prevent major rock falls, plus rock bolts and wire mesh where necessary. Once driven, the tunnel was lined with sprayed concrete throughout with an in-situ invert cast in the base for dry weather flows. Sensitive construction methods and traffic management in the busy town centre were vital to the projects success.
